Voltage optimisation training

PARTNERS: Energeia Cost Savings

Challenge: By 2020 the UK Government has set a target for around 50 million homes and small businesses to have a smart meter installed.

What we are doing: In response to these exciting opportunities across the energy sector, Zero Carbon Futures together with our parent company Gateshead College and partner Energeia Cost Savings has designed a 10 day energy course to introduce unemployed clients to Voltage Optimisation and Energy Efficiency in the home.

Smart Technologies enable customers to understand and monitor their energy consumption in their home. Integrating domestic Voltage Optimisation units into the home will enable consumers and energy companies to effectively manage their electricity demand.

The development of these emerging technologies in the energy sector will generate a demand for skilled workers nationwide who will be involved in areas such as meter installations, maintenance & repairs and customer energy advice.

The Voltage Optimisation course which is part of a wider Home Energy Efficiency Programme explores opportunities for unemployed clients to gain those skills, experience and knowledge in mounting a domestic voltage optimisation unit.

All learners who successfully complete the course have the opportunity to gain formal RoSPA qualifications in areas such as Asbestos Awareness, Working at Height and Confined Spaces which will further enhance the qualification and help them back on the pathway to employment.

Result: During 2015, two 2-week skills work based pilots were delivered to unemployed clients in North East England. On completion of the course, all learners were offered a guaranteed job interview with Evolve Facility Services and three learners successfully gained full time employment with companies in the energy sector.
