PROJECT: Supporting infrastructure development and public consultation

Challenge: Ongoing support for the North East’s charging infrastructure

What we did: 

ZCF has been working with the North East team since 2014 when the organisation took over responsibility for the North East’s charging infrastructure.

Building on an infrastructure demand study which we undertook in 2014, we were then commissioned to support the authority to develop a bid towards the OLEV Go Ultra Low city programme to extend the charging network. The bid successfully secured £1.5 million to support the next generation of charging infrastructure to include two filling stations and six recharging hubs. We supported the bid by developing the specifications for the charging infrastructure along with indicative costs and methodology.

To support the capital funding available, the team also identified a desire to build a wider programme which required revenue match funding. ZCF identified an opportunity to apply to an ERDF Low Carbon Fund and working with the team we scoped out a programme of works that would meet the needs of the funder as well as providing funding to support a range of additional activity which would engage with potential new EV drivers. A bid was developed which covered a number of work streams which included a public awareness campaign, a fleet support programme, a research study on the impact of the new charging infrastructure and an SME competition to support product and service innovation. The project was successful and launched in 2017.

We continue to work with the authority on a number of the project strands. We supported the specification of the new infrastructure and now installed, we are commissioned to evaluate the use of the new estate and the impact this has on the existing infrastructure. This includes engagement with EV drivers in the area to monitor their needs and requirements for the future as well as a large-scale study of the attitudes of non-EV drivers towards switching to electric.
